Interesting facts about "Gardens Without Borders"

“Gardens Without Borders” is a unique network of gardens of all sizes in Germany and France. Its aim is to revive the gardening tradition of eastern France, the Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate. It emerged from cross-border cooperation between the Saarland, the Moselle department and Luxembourg. Project funding from the European Union made it possible to refurbish existing gardens and create new ones. Today, 23 gardens from different eras and on various themes await visitors.

A rich gardening tradition

Although the geographical area covered by the network boasts a significant natural heritage, it is not currently known for its gardens.

How the project came about

The “Gardens Without Borders” project is part of the active policy of cross-border cooperation pursued since the 1980s by the Saarland and the Moselle department, which touches on many areas of life: the creation of a Eurozone to attract businesses, the development of cross-border walking trails, learning the neighbour’s language from a very early age... The Gardens Without Borders are among the most significant achievements of this policy.

To qualify for the network, the gardens must meet a set of criteria laid down in a quality agreement.

The cross-border dimension

For several years now, the Moselle department and the Saarland have been promoting a policy of Franco-German cooperation. The “Gardens Without Borders” project is one of their most significant concrete achievements. In addition to the high standard of its gardens, the network is also distinguished by its cross-border dimension, which involves numerous partners.
